From Good to Great: The Personal Growth Playbook
Becoming is an Art, Not an Accident
Becoming who you want to be doesn’t happen overnight.
It’s not a switch you flip — it’s a series of deliberate, sometimes uncomfortable, but deeply rewarding choices that pull you closer to your future self.
Think about the person you see when you close your eyes and imagine your best life — the confidence they walk with, the way they think, the opportunities they attract. The gap between where you are and who they are isn’t just about luck or talent. It’s about building yourself with intention, layer by layer.
The good news? You can close that gap. And you can start now.
Over the years, I’ve found that the journey of becoming isn’t just about habits or motivation — it’s about identity, clarity, and execution. To bring this to life, I’ll weave in lessons from some of the most transformative books I’ve read (all linked below so you can dive deeper). These aren’t just “good reads” — they’re blueprints for rewiring your thinking and actions so you become the person you want to be.
1. Start with the Story You’re Telling Yourself
(Inspired by Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller*)
Before you change your habits, career, or relationships — you have to rewrite your internal story.
Donald Miller’s Building a StoryBrand is about helping businesses clarify their message so customers listen, but it’s also a powerful framework for personal transformation. Think of yourself as the main character in your life’s story. Every character has:
- A goal
- A problem to overcome
- A guide to help them
- A transformation they’re chasing
When you see yourself as the hero of your own story, you start asking:
- What do I actually want?
- What obstacles am I willing to overcome?
- What actions would the “future me” take today?
The art of becoming begins with storytelling — not to the world, but to yourself. You have to believe a new story before you can live it.
Action Step: Write a one-page “script” of your life as if you’ve already become who you want to be. Be specific — where you live, how you speak, what you earn, who you spend time with. Read it every morning until it starts to feel real.
2. Learn to Scale Yourself
(Inspired by Blitzscaling by Reid Hoffman & Chris Yeh*)
In business, blitzscaling means growing at a speed that prioritizes momentum over perfection. The same applies to your personal growth.
Too often, we delay becoming who we want to be because we think we need to perfect the plan first. In reality, the fastest path is to start messy, adjust often.
Your future self is not created by thinking about them — they’re created by doing the work, testing strategies, failing fast, and scaling what works. That’s how companies grow, and it’s how individuals grow.
For example:
- Want to be a confident speaker? Book a speaking gig before you feel ready.
- Want to be financially independent? Start investing small amounts now, even if you’re learning along the way.
- Want to run a business? Launch a simple offer before you design the perfect website.
Momentum beats perfection every time.
Action Step: Pick one big area of your life you want to improve. Then set a 30-day challenge where you take daily action toward it — without waiting for the “right time.”
3. Make Yourself Contagious
(Inspired by Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger)
Jonah Berger’s Contagious breaks down why ideas spread — but the same principles apply to how people perceive you. If you want to become who you want to be, you need to create an energy and presence that others naturally talk about, recommend, and want to be around.
This isn’t about becoming fake or constantly “on.” It’s about embodying qualities that are magnetic:
- Authentic enthusiasm for your work
- Depth in your conversations
- A consistent way you show up in the world
Think about the version of yourself you’re becoming. What do people say about them when they’re not in the room? Your reputation is an invisible marketing machine for your identity.
Action Step: Write down three words you want people to use to describe you. Every interaction is a chance to reinforce those words — from how you email to how you walk into a room.
4. Commit to the Shift from Good to Great
(Inspired by Good to Great by Jim Collins)
Jim Collins studied companies that went from being good to truly great, and the lesson is clear: greatness is a choice, not a condition you’re born into.
For individuals, the leap from “good” to “great” requires:
- Discipline: Consistently doing the work, even when it’s boring.
- Clarity: Knowing your “Hedgehog Concept” — the one thing you can be the best at, that also drives your income and fuels your passion.
- The Right Circle: Surrounding yourself with people who push you toward excellence, not comfort.
You can’t become your best self by doing what’s good enough. Greatness means raising your personal standard and refusing to lower it — no matter how tempting it is to coast.
Action Step: Audit your habits, circle, and standards. Where are you tolerating “good enough” instead of pursuing greatness?
5. Master the Game You’re Playing
(Inspired by Mastering the VC Game by Jeffrey Bussgang)
While Mastering the VC Game focuses on the world of venture capital, the takeaway is universal: to succeed, you have to understand the rules of the game you’re playing.
Your “game” might be your industry, your art form, your social environment, or your business niche. The fastest way to become who you want to be is to learn:
- Who the key players are
- How opportunities flow
- What skills and traits are rewarded
- How to position yourself so the right people notice you
The people who thrive aren’t just talented — they’re strategically informed. They know how to make moves that matter.
Action Step: Identify one skill or insider knowledge you need to dominate your “game.” Commit to learning it over the next 90 days.
6. Reprogram Your Subconscious
(Inspired by The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy)
You can’t become who you want to be if your subconscious keeps pulling you back to who you’ve always been.
Your subconscious runs most of your daily thoughts, habits, and beliefs — often based on outdated experiences. The Power of Your Subconscious Mind teaches that you can rewire this programming by feeding it new, empowering thoughts.
This is why affirmations, visualization, and gratitude aren’t “woo-woo” — they’re brain training. Over time, your subconscious starts working for you instead of against you.
Action Step: Every night before bed, visualize yourself already living your ideal life. Feel the emotions of that reality. Let your subconscious start building it while you sleep.
7. Be Fully Present in the Process
(Inspired by The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle)
Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now reminds us that becoming isn’t about chasing a future so much that you forget to live now.
Yes, we’re talking about who you want to be, but here’s the paradox:
- You can only create that future self by showing up fully in the present.
- The habits, thoughts, and emotions you practice now shape who you’ll be later.
Instead of living in a constant state of “I’ll be happy when…,” anchor into the small wins you’re achieving today. Gratitude in the now fuels resilience for the journey ahead.
Action Step: Set three “presence checkpoints” in your day — moments where you pause, breathe, and ask, Am I being the person I want to be in this moment?
Final Thoughts: Your Becoming is Already in Motion
Here’s the truth: you’re already becoming someone every single day. The question is — are you becoming that person by default, or by design?
When you combine the clarity of your story (StoryBrand), the speed of action (Blitzscaling), the magnetism of your presence (Contagious), the standards of excellence (Good to Great), the strategy of knowing your game (Mastering the VC Game), the rewiring of your mind (Power of Your Subconscious Mind), and the groundedness of presence (Power of Now) — you step into a life that feels intentional, aligned, and magnetic.
Becoming isn’t about changing everything overnight. It’s about making choices today that your future self will thank you for.
And that future self? They’re already waiting for you.
